FRANCE / BLACK PERIGORD - Gastronomic & Historic Riding tour

In South-Western France, the Black Périgord dominates the Vézère and Dordogne valleys.

This region is famous in whole France for its very rich gastronomy and history.

It owes its name to its high concentration of forest and green oaks with dense, dark and persistent foliage, particularly abundant in the Sarladais. The wonderful Dordogne valley tells us the Périgord story, over centuries.This riding tour offers riders pleasure of viewing with its wonderful landscapes and castles, and pleasure of eating as well. At the heart of Black Périgord, you will be warmly welcomed and spend an unforgatable week.

Day 1
Meeting point is at the guesthouse in the late afternoon. For the riders who don’t have a car, the transfer is at 6pm30 from Lalinde train station. We get to know the local team and the other riders.
Dinner and night is at the guesthouse. 

Day 2
The local team presents and assigns the horses to the riders. We leave the Bannes castle (a private castle from the XVth century) at about 10am30. Here, we can admire its charming garden, converted with water bodies and a waterfall, as well as, the castle’s outdoor architecture.
Then, we go through the fortified town of Lalinde, and along the canal until reaching Mauzac village to have a picnic lunch on the right side of the Dordogne. The afternoon, we go to Limeuil, a former fishing port situated at the confluence of both rivers Dordogne and Vézère. Dinner and night in an hotel in the countryside.

Day 3
After a good ride through woods and forests, we have a picnic lunch at St Cyprien, a village situated at the hillside. The afternoon, we go towards Castelnaud la Chapelle through a medieval path from the Tayac castle. The evening, we leave our horses in the Céou valley.
Dinner and night in a guesthouse at Castelnaud. 

Day 4
We leave the Céou valley, and its total transparency river, to go up the hillsides and go down in the Dordogne valley. This morning, we visit the Castelnaud castle and its chapel from the XIIth century. The castle dominates the Dordogne valley, and you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view on the Beynac, Marqueyssac and the Roque Gageac sites. Wehave a picnic lunch under a windmill in the Domme bastide. From the headland of the medieval city, we can enjoy a panoramic view on the Dordogne valley, from Montfort cingle at the East, to Beynac at the West. The afternoon, we go through the Dordogne valley to reach Vitrac, sleeping place for our horses. We go towards Sarlat by car, a very well preserved medieval city with narrow alleys and half-timbered houses.
Dinner and night is in a guesthouse or in a hotel.

Day 5
Today, we only spend the morning riding. We ride through Sarlat, and we have a picnic lunch at Campagnac castle. We have a free afternoon to enjoy the colorful and busy alleys in Sarlat.
As the Black Périgord capital and "Town of Art and History", Sarlat remains one of the most beautiful city in Europe. This town offers its visitors a rich architecture dating from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It is possible to have a guided tour in the afternoon, or by night after dinner.
Dinner and night is in a guesthouse or in a hotel.

Day 6
To reach Meyrals village, we go through chestnut forests. Here, we sight the Puymartin castle, rebuilt in the XVth century. We have a guided tour of the castle. We have lunch under Meyrals’ church. In the afternoon, we go to Audrix, and enjoy a wonderful panoramic view on the Vézère valley.
Dinner and night is in a guesthouse or in a hotel.

Day 7
In the morning, we go down in the Vézère valley to reach Limeuil. Then, we go along the Dordogne towards Cadouin. We have a picnic lunch nearby the Cadouin abbey built in the XIIth century. Then, we have a guided tour of the abbey church built in the XIIth century, and the Gothic cloister with its columns and Rennaissance capitals. In the afternoon, we go through the Béssede forest, the most important forest in the Périgord. We take some time to visit Molière village, a fortified town from the XIIth century. Then, we come back to the Bannes castle.
Dinner and night is in a guesthouse or in a hotel.

Day 8
Riders leave after breakfast, or are transferred to Lalinde train station.


Important: The above itinerary is provided on an indicative basis and our guide reserves the right to modify the itinerary depending on the condition of paths, the seasons, the availabilities in the hotels and guesthouses.

Our horses and required riding ability

Horses

Arabic and Paint crossbred horses, Arabic breed and saddle breed. They live in meadow throughout the year in herd, and most of them were born in our equestrian farm. Our horses are trained in winter in order to be ready for summer trails.

Tack
Leather trail saddles customized for this horse breed, "Myler" horse net,
Saddle pad with pockets included, as well as a poncho and water bottles.
Helmet is not compulsory but strongly recommended.

Recommended riding ability

This riding tour is suitable for advanced riders who well manage the three gaits (walk, rising trot, suspended gallop) on a varied terrain, and in open spaces. The advanced rider has a regular riding practice, a good physical condition (able to ride 30 kilometers per day, an average of 5 hours riding).

Good to know
-Children accompanied by an adult are welcome on this ride from the age of 12. Children non accompagnied are welcome from the age of 14 (with parental consent).
- Weight limit is 100kg (220 pounds)
-The non riders are also welcome. They can follow in the support vehicle and participate in the visits.


The local team

Guide
David is an Equestrian Tourism Guide. He speaks English and knows the technical terms in that language. Britta is the translator in English, German, Dutch, and Spanish, and she makes you discover the history of the region.

Logistic
The logistic vehicle follows the riding trail (vehicle + converted van) to prepare your lunch and dinner. Logistic staff prepares a buffet for lunch and is aware of your needs. Luggages are carried in the vehicle.

Accommodation
Along this riding tour, the 7 nights are provided in guesthouse in double rooms with private facilities.
Single room accommodation is available at extra cost. To be asked for & paid at booking.

Meals

Continental breakfast. For lunch, you will have a cold buffet with a large choice (adapted to particular diets) with wine, coffee and water included, organized by the trail logistic.
You will have dinner in the guesthouse, in the restaurant or in the hotel (wine and other extras are not included)

Languages spoken by the guide: English / French / German /Dutch, and Spanish speaking guide.

Group size: From 5 to 10 riders

Arrival airport / train station:

Meeting directly at the first guesthouse at about 05.00 pm.

Possibility to be transferred from Lalinde train station with a 20€ per person supplement to be paid directly on the spot.
In that case, plan an arrival in the middle of the afternoon on the first day and a departure after 10.00 am on day 8 (about 30mn drive).
