LOIRE VALLEY - Historic Castles Horse Ride (Amboise)

Visit the world famous Loire Valley on horseback, a real trail back in time, in a UNESCO World heritage site.

This horse riding trail encompasses several of the most important Renaissance castles.

We will visit : Chaumont sur Loire (15th century), heritage of Diane de Poitiers, Amboise (15th century), residence of several French kings, Chenonceau, known as the “Castle of the ladies”, Cheverny (17th century) which has been owned by the same family for 7 centuries and Chambord, the hugest of all castles built by François I.

Day 1
Riders are receptionned at the Montrichard train station at 6pm and transferred to the hotel to spend dinner and night. If you have a car, you can go directly to the hotel.

Day 2
After the presentation and the attribution of the horses, we ride to Fougères sur Bièvre. We have lunch under the castle. It gives the perfect image of a small fortified castle built in the late XVth century, with a curtain, a dungeon, gunner loops, a covered way and machicolations. In the late afternoon, we visit the amazingly furnished Cheverny castle. This is a seigneurial property from the same family for more than six centuries. From the botanic park to the magnificence inside the castle, from the Tintin exhibition to the forest park, the owners invite you to discover a fantastic, authentic and living heritage.Dinner and night in a guesthouse or in a hotel.

Day 3
In the morning, we go towards Chambord where we have a picnic lunch. Chambord is the hugest castle in the Loire valley. This castle is an unrivalled architectural achievement with its double revolution central staircase. It is a miracle of elegance situated in the heart of a wide 5440 hectares natural forest reserve where the stag is the King. We have a visit of the castle after lunch. Then, we go towards Villesavin Castle, built in the XVth century by the same French and Italian instructors and workers who realized the great Royal residences. This castle was erected during four centuries, in an almost perfect completeness. Dinner and night in a guesthouse or in a hotel.

Day 4
We ride through the forest to arrive to Beauregard castle. Here, we have a picnic lunch. This place is the Chambord former hunting lodge, built under François the 1st’s orders. It has always been known for its famous portraits gallery, a monumental work built during three generations, and endowed with 327 famous people portraits, an amazing Lapis Lazuli ceiling (7 times the value of gold), and an amazing 5600 Delft earthenware tiles pavement. After the visit of the castle, we ride to the village of Candé-sur-Beuvron.Diner and night in the hotel.

Day 5
We ride along the Loire to reach the village of Chaumont sur Loire. It is a lovely village, classified as a U.N.E.S.C.O World Heritage, well-known for its feudal castle which dominates the valley and the village. We have a picnic lunch nearby the castle. It was built at the end of the XVth century, and illustrates both gothic defensive style and Renaissance approval style architecture. Don’t miss the XIXth century stables, considered as the most luxurious in Europe at that time. After the visit of the castle, we ride through the Sudais wood and arrive in full countryside to spend the evening. Dinner and night in a hotel.

Day 6
Departure at 10am. We ride to Amboise. We ride up on the hillside, and enjoy vineyards and cereal crops fields. We arrive at Amboise to have a picnic lunch and to visit the castle. The XVth century is a prosperous period for Amboise. The Kings Louis XI, Charles VIII, and François the 1st extend and embellish it. In the afternoon,  we cross Amboise forest to arrive to Saint Martin le Beau where the family Guestault, owning the hotel and the restaurant, welcome us to taste Touraine Montlouis wines. Dinner and night in a hotel..

Day 7
After breakfast, we ride down in the Cher valley again, and have long gallops along the Cher river. Then, we arrive to the amazing Chenonceau Castle. It was built on the Cher river, whose water reflects its Renaissance architecture unequaled beauty. It owes the name of "Château des Dames" due to the history of France. It was built
In 1513 by Katherine Briçonnet, and successivelly embellished by Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Médicis. Finally, Chenonceau was preserved from the Révolution destruction by Mrs Dupin. It is the jewel of the Val de Loire. We have lunch in Chenonceau’s place, and then, a visit of the castle. In the early afternoon, we leave the Cher banks to ride to our evening point. Dinner and night in the hotel.

Day 8
After breakfast, we go to Montrichard train station at about 9am. The riders having a car can leave on their own.
