The heart of Provence is in the hills that bind the sea to the Alps. These are the sloping vineyards; the cultivated lands and the colorful scenery that charmed Cezanne (Aix en Provence), Van Gogh (Arles), Chagall or Giono.

Luberon, the heart of Provence

Just off the Rhône Valley, basking in a perfect Mediterranean climate, the Luberon has, over the centuries, kept its assets - both cultural and natural - perfectly intact.

The Luberon, which has been a listed area (Parc Naturel Régional) since 1977, offers a wide array of quality offerings to satisfy the discerning tourist.

Its beautiful villages (Bonnieux, Roussillon, Lourmarin, Gordes...), its local produce and its craftwork will all combine to ensure that you spend an unforgettable time in this revered part of Provence.

Camargue, a land of bulls and horses...

In the south of Provence, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, Camargue is a unique environment of marshlands.   The mighty Rhone river meets the Mediterranean Sea in a huge delta where earth and water are deeply mixed.

The Camargue is a marshy triangle bounded by two branches of the Rhône and the Mediterranean Sea.

With an area of over 930 km² (360 sq. miles), the Camargue is western Europe's largest river delta, with exceptional biological diversity, and home to unique breeds of horses and bulls, and to more than 400 species of birds including pink flamingos.

The Camargue is home to a specialised breed of bull. These bulls run in semi-liberty.

Camargue horses form distinct breed, which, like the Camargue bulls, live in semi-liberty.The Camargue is one of the oldest breeds in the world, closely related to the prehistoric horses whose remains have been found elsewhere in southern France.

They are used in rounding up Camargue bulls. They are never stabled, but well able to survive the humid summer heat and the biting winter cold.

Haute Provence, between Provence and the Alps

The Lure Mountain to the north as a protective climatic barrier, and the Luberon to the south form the frontiers of Haute-Provence. The Forcalquier area nestles between these two sleeping giants, with its enchanted hills and valleys where narrow shady roads wind along, adorned with Romanesque chapels.

In June and July, the hills are covered by lavender fields and you ride in the incredible scents of these millions of flowers...

In Roman times the Domitian Way crossed this fertile agricultural land.

In the Middle Ages the Forcalquier area was an independent county. This was the period during which the typically Provençal perched villages developed.

This is a piece of countryside with an easygoing lifestyle, under a cloudless azure sky.
