POITOU - Riding tour in the heart of Poitou

The Vienne department, in the heart of the Poitou region, is the perfect place for nice riding tour in the countryside: discover valleys, hills and rivers small villages and isolated farms...

Infinite ways between the Atlantic valleys and the Central Massif foothills open many itineraries your guide will be happy to make you discover.

 

Riding between the Vienne, the Haute-Vienne and the Charente, you will move to discover changing and undulating landscapes in this rural region full of history and legends.

Day 1
Meeting point at the riding centre before 9am. We have a first contact with our guide and horses. We start riding in the Vienne valley. We have a picnic lunch alongside the Vienne River in the Isle Jourdain. In the afternoon, we ride on the viaduct (40m) and enjoy being in a former railway to have a good canter. We spend the night in an authentic hamlet.
Day 2
Today, we ride through Nerignac. We have a picnic in Adriers at a lakeside, where we can have a bath with our horses. In the afternoon, we ride up to the Vienne highest point (231m). We ride through many farms and see a lot of limousines cow and sheep farming. We spend the night in a former farm and enjoy a delicious dinner with local products: poultry and vegetable.
Day 3
Today, we ride through the Hospice wood. We enjoy the beauty of the lakes and long paths to have good gallops among the fields. We have a picnic lunch in the banks of the Gartempe in Saulgé. We can have a bath with our horses in the lake, and enjoy taking pictures of this nice place. We have dinner and night in a farm in Montmorillon (an art and history town we visit). Dinner is also made with local products.

Day 4
This morning, we ride to the hamlet of Moussac, which possesses a wonderful architectural heritage. We ride in sandy paths crossing the lands. We arrive at the Gartempe valley and have a picnic lunch in a former mill. We enjoy a nice view on other mills and castles. In the afternoon, we ride on the viaduct again up to the Roc d’Enfer. Tonight, we spend the night in a former farm and have dinner with local products. A swimming pool is available for those who want to have a bath.
Day 5
Today, the landscapes are more and more undulated and we see sheep and cows. We may also see a lot of deers and game. Then, we ride through many fords and nearby lakes.  We have a picnic lunch in the Epinay: a former host house. We are in the equestrian centre in late afternoon and the riders leave on their own.

Our horses and required riding ability

Horses

The equestrian farm has more than 40 horses and ponies, from different breeds (pur Arabian cross-breed, French saddle, barbs, quarter horses...). Most of them were born in the farm. They are well-trained and like leaving their field for a riding trail! Whatever your level is, you will always find your best trailing friend.

Tack
We use "Forestier" or "Prestige" brand trailing saddles. Western saddles are available upon request (specify such request at booking time). Holsters or saddlebags are provided.

Suitable riding ability
Our itinerant riding tours are for experienced riders feeling comfortable at the three gaits, and with a regular horseback practice. It is recommended to have a good physical condition for this horse riding (5 to 6 hours riding per day).  

Good to know
Minors accompanied by their parents are accepted from 12 years old.
Helmet is compulsory. It can be lent by the equestrian centre.
Rider maximum weight: 110kg.

A professional guide and Poitou lover will make you discover the charm of this region.

Logistics

Your saddle is equipped with a saddle pad with pockets and a pair of saddlebags to carry your personnal effects riding. A logistic vehicle carries your luggage and lunch in order to limit the weight on horseback.

 

Accomodation
You will stay in rural guesthouses, in double or single rooms (depending on availabilities).

Meals
A minibus brings us our picnic for lunch. Dinners are in restaurants or in guest tables. They are traditional and local gastronomy (wine and aperitif included).

Group size: 3 to 6 riders

Arrival airport / train station:
Meeting at the riding centre.
Transfers can be organized from Poitiers train station (extra cost : 35 € per person for a return trip, to pay directly on the spot).
