Cezanne's Provence Equestrian Holidays

This is a trail ride around the famous Sainte-Victoire mountain. You will discover why painters such as Cezanne fell in love with these contrasting landscapes.

The bright white limestone cliffs, the blue of the sky, the green of pine forests and the red clay at the foot of the mountain offer a mosaic nature where you can discover about 900 kinds of plants, 27 mammal species and 126 bird species.

Cezanne's Provence trail ride / Ride in France - Randocheval

Day 1 - Sunday
Meeting at Marseille airport or Aix-en-Provence train station, or directly at the riding centre around 6 pm.
Accommodation, introduction to the trail ride and dinner.

Day 2 - Monday
Morning ride in the Luberon natural park to get used to your horse. After lunch in the guesthouse, the horses will be loaded in the truck and you will be transferred by our minibus to Saint-Paul-lès-Durance, an old Roman fluvial harbour used to transport wood and many goods from the Alps to Marseille and the Mediterranean coast. You will start your ride on pleasant trails in woods and along vineyards to arrive in the village of Jouques, and later to reach Peyrolles en Provence. Dinner and overnight in a charming guesthouse just outside the village.

Day 3 - Tuesday
You will ride in the typical Mediterranean forest . Pine trees, green oaks, and many herbs such as rosemary and thyme will perfume your ride. You will follow the old Verdon canal, built in 1865 to bring the Alps water to Aix-en-Provence and it’s numerous fountains. Riding to the North of the Sainte-Victoire mountain, you will discover many sheepfolds and Roman ruins on the way. A copious lunch prepared by our assistant will wait for you under the shade of pine trees. The afternoon, you will ride to the Bimont lake where you will be able to enjoy a swim in the turquoise water with your horse ! Overnight near the village of Vauvenargues, famous for its castle. Bought in 1958 by Picasso, the painter lived in the castle of Vauvenargues until 1962. He is now buried in the castle's park.

Day 4 - Wednesday
You will start your ride on the North of Mount Sainte-Victoire to reach the Sinne observatory and the well of Auzon. You will follow the Gardiol forest and ride along the Vacon stream towards Rians, important crossroad between the Alps and the coast. The tradition says that Hannibal took this road to pass the Alps before his conquest of Rome. Dinner and night in a hotel or guesthouse.

Day 5 - Thursday
You will leave the vineyards and ride towards the South and sunny side of the Sainte-Victoire. You will discover high white limestone cliffs contrasting with the green forests, and you will imagine Cezanne walking on these perfumed trails. You will cross Puyloubier before arriving at the hotel near Chateauneuf-le-Rouge.

Day 6 - Friday
You will end your ride around the fascinating Sainte-Victoire mountain. Spectacular points of view on the Bimont barrage, retaining the Verdon river, while riding. Then, you will ride near a Roman aqueduc. The trail will lead you to the Bibemus stone quarry. From ancient times to the 18th century, Aix-en-Provence's monuments were built with these red stones. Cezanne fell in love with  this mixture of mineral and vegetal landscapes and made 11 oil paintings and 16 aquarelles of this place. The ride will end near Aix-en-Provence at Saint-Marc-Jaumegarde where you will enjoy the last lunch in an inn. The afternoon, we will drive you to Aix-en-Provence with our minibus to visit Cezanne’s workshop, walk in the town and enjoy some shopping. At the end of the afternoon, you will be transfered back to the riding centre if you left your car, or to the train station or airport.

Our horses and required riding ability

Horse breeds
Our travel companions are Spanish or barb crossbreds, adapted to trail riding. Well balanced and willing, they live in a herd, outdoors, and are only used for trail riding. They are our guarantee for a relaxing and safe ride.

Our saddles are designed for trail riding and allow a laid back style of riding.

Recommended riding ability

Intermediate level. You must have already practiced the 3 different paces (Walk, Trot and Canter) and have some experience in horse riding.

The pace will vary according to the terrain. During the ride, we advise you to take care of your horse in order to get to know him better and to create a  special bond with him.

In order to make the most of the ride, we require riders to be at ease with walk, trot and canter, in outdoor riding. For riders willing to discover the pleasures of trail riding in a more progressive way, we have created a Stationary Ride allowing guests to become confident at all gaits step by step.

The local team

Guides are certified, and are friends who made a job of their passion. They will share with you this passion and the pleasure of trail riding. Whether in the Alps or on the beaches of Camargue, amongst odorant thym, rosemary and lavander, our guides insure riders safety in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

In shared double or triple bedrooms in comfortable guesthouses or small hotels. Meals

At lunch, our assistant will prepare a substantial buffet. A “pastis”, a glass of red wine a barbecue by a mountain stream, a refreshing salad, a nap before leaving again: these small pleasures will add to the friendliness of our rides.
